the deuce brothers
a zed and two noughts

the deuce brothers, played by brian deacon and eric deacon, are traumatized at the beginning of the film by the death of their wives in an obscure car accident involving a swan from the local zoo. this event triggers their slow decent into madness, for their search for answers leads them to an obsession with death and decay that eventually claims their lives. in the accident oliver and oswald lost their second half (their wives) which sends them searching for something to fill the void. this eventually leads them back to each other as they are/were siamese twins, but it is only temporary solace. their decent into madness is paralleled by the increase in grotesques of the animals they are watching decay. at the end of the film their obsession with this decay leads them to the top of the food chain (humans) and they decide to kill themselves and film the decay of their bodies. once they have died snails are shown reclaiming their bodies and equipment, symbolizing their reunification with their wives and the return to wholeness.
