alex alex, played by malcolm mc-dowell, is just one of the characters, albeit the most extreme, who bring a sense madness to the film a clockwork orange. in a decaying society where perhaps only a few bits of sanity and civility remain, alex is an example of what kind of person this sort of society could produce. alex enjoys violent conflict, rape, torture, and other forms of crime. he acts seemingly with out conscience or discretion preying on the wealthy and poor alike. akin to the character of the joker in the dark knight, alex doesn't have a reason for being this way, there is no way to analyze his position, he simply is another example of an 'agent of chaos.' the doctors of the institute he is admitted to, 'help' him, only by creating a situation where he can't hurt anyone anymore, not by getting to the root of his violent behavior. This is because there isn't one.
